SRT files are a great way to add closed captions to your videos. Video captions were designed to support people who don’t hear well, but many people use it today. People might mute the sound and read the captions, or they might watch shows in other languages.

What Is an SRT File?

When you have a file with an SRT extension, it contains the test of what is said in a video. It also has the timing for the words and the order they appear. It was developed in Europe as SubRip software. It was used to rip or extract subtitles from films and export the information as an SRT.

The SRT file has to work with the video for the final product. It is not a replacement but rather a complementary file. SRT is the most widely used type of closed captioning because of its simplicity.

What’s in the Format?

The Sequence: First, you have the caption block number on the first line. They are in order, so they start at 1 and move until the last one in the video.

The Timecode: The next line has the time when the caption should appear and the time it should disappear. These are called timecodes. They are written in the format of hours: minutes: seconds, milliseconds.

The Text: On the next line, the words of the caption are written. It can be one or two lines, and there is a limit of 32 characters on each one. There is a blank line after this line.

Reasons to Use SRT Files

There are different formats available for closed captioning, but SRT is the most popular. There are several reasons for this. First, they are easy to create and update. They are made as a simple text file, and you don’t need special software to make them. You can easily edit them and change them when you want to use any text editor.

In addition, they are compatible with most platforms, including social media such as Facebook, YouTube, and more. You can actually use one file for a number of different platforms.
